Mr. Hinrich Global Winner: Beta Gamma Sigma’s Entrepreneurial Achievement Award

In recognition of his innovative business achievements in combination with service to humanity, the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society (BGS)  bestowed upon Mr. Merle A. Hinrich the 2018 Beta Gamma Sigma Entrepreneurial Achievement Award.

Beta Gamma Sigma is the international business honor society for AACSB-accredited schools, and is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS). Members currently reside in over 190 countries, with notable members including Nobel Prize winners, Olympians, inventors, CEOs of major global companies and nonprofit organizations, and deans of the top business schools.

According to Beta Gamma Sigma: “the award was established to provide appropriate recognition to those individuals and firms who contribute significantly to the vitality and strength of the economy, combining innovative business achievement with service to humanity.”

The award ceremony was held on September 28, 2018 at Hong Kong Baptist University in the presence of scholars, alumni, HF team members, distinguished guests, faculty and students from the University.

During the ceremony, Mr. Hinrich and Dr. Y. M. Wong, Director of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre, discussed how to have an edge over competitors in the international trade environment. Mr. Hinrich stressed that in order to communicate across cultures effectively, it is important to strengthen sales and marketing skills with a focus on adaptability.

 “All businesses are constantly evolving, and we as entrepreneurs have to adjust accordingly to keep abreast of the ever-changing business environment, " said Mr.Hinrich. " However, change is not always easy, so you have to be very flexible and thoroughly understand your capabilities before you can operate in a variety of cultures and cope with change".  

Mr. Hinrich also discussed his lifelong conviction that mutually beneficial global trade promotes peace between nations and how that influences his lifelong work.

Tina Wang (China, HKPolyU EBM '20), who attended the event, commented: “Congratulations to Mr. Hinrich! I was touched by what he said: 'Every rejection is just closer to the next yes!"

Phoebe Lu (China, HKBU BBA ’14) represented HFAA with Mr. Hinrich in the presentation of scholarship certificates to our two newest HKBU BBA scholars, Zhu Kaili (China, HKBU BBA ’21) (Kelly) and Lung Zhuoshi (China, HKBU BBA ’21) (Cecilia), during the ceremony.

The event was also attended by other Hinrich scholars and alumni, such as Tina Wang (China, HKPolyU EBM ’19), Vini Damayanti (Indonesia, HKBU MAIJS ’20), Juliette Li (China, HKBU BM ’19), etc…

Phoebe is an HKBU alumni who started her own business exporting phone accessories two years ago, also spoke at the event. She discussed her own entrepreneurial journey and how her experience as an HF scholar taught her the value of lifelong learning, grit and how adapt across cultures.

Since 2003, nearly 80 students have completed the Hinrich Global Trade Leader Scholarship programs at Hong Kong Baptist University. All demonstrate excellence in academic performance and leadership. So far, six Hinrich alumni and scholars have been awarded membership to the prestigious Beta Gamma Sigma Society.

During the ceremony, Mr. Hinrich and Dr. Y. M. Wong, Director of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre conducted a fruitful dialogue, where Mr. Hinrich encouraged students to strengthen sales and marketing skills in all aspects to be successful in the international trade career.
