Message from ALC President

Dear alumni and friends,

The role of the ALC took on new significance this month as VP Phoebe (China, HKBU BBA ’14) and I were invited to represent the ALC and alumni at the annual Council of Members board meeting! Together with former ALC members Laura (China, Thunderbird ‘09), Roger (China, Thunderbird ‘13) and Ben (US, CUHK MBA ‘11), and our secretariat Thu (Vietnam, HKBU MAIJS ’17), we joined the Council and Foundation executive to discuss great progress in 2017 and 2018, and the way forward.

This participation by members of the ALC is laying the groundwork for more active engagement by the alumni in Foundation governance.

Held on November 28 in Shenzhen, HF board members, management and members of the ALC discussed and confirmed our next-generation of programs, fondly referred to as HF 2.0. HF will sharpen its focus on trade-related education and employment (rebranded as the Trade Leadership Development, or TLD for short), enhance our International Trade Research program, and discontinue the Export Trade Assistance program. Please read Alex’s note for full details.

During the visit, we also had the chance to spend time with Stephen Olson, HF Research Fellow. He shared with the board, ALC, scholars and alumni his analysis of the unfolding US-China trade tensions and potential scenarios for the Trump-Xi meeting in Argentina (Steve nailed it with his prediction of a grandiose ‘breakthrough’ with little substance and will likely be met with significant challenges).

Our day ended with a chance to network and dine alongside our new scholars from Hong Kong and other alumni who live in Shenzhen, as well as Mr. Hinrich’s family. The group of HF scholars had spent the day touring a Luenthai factory in Guangzhou (our employer partner), visiting the sampling department, testing labs and production lines.

As always, the trip was an opportunity to catch up with our Hong Kong/China chapter. It also served as yet another reminder of the value of this lifelong learning journey we are all on. As we roll out new programs, HFAA is so appreciative of alumni engagement, which will play an increasingly important role in the Foundation moving forward.

I wish you all the best for the new year and look forward to even more personal and professional development in the year ahead.

With warmest regards,

Mohammad Nurun Nobi

HF-supported China, Trade & Power book launch

Stewart Paterson’s book ‘China, Trade and Power’ captured the attention of over 80 guests at an HF-sponsored launch event on Nov. 30 at the China Club in Central, Hong Kong. The expert panel discussed policy ramifications for Western countries and paths forward amidst new challenges of our multilateral trading system. Matt Haldane (US, Tsinghua GBJ ‘15) traveled from Shenzhen for the event. Ten lucky alumni received copies of the book, which can also be ordered online here.

HF-sponsored special exhibition at the HK Maritime Museum

As the benefits of trade between China and the U.S. are increasingly being questioned and building tensions, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum is launching an exhibition called“The Dragon and the Eagle: American Traders in China, A Century of Trade from 1784 to 1900" . Sponsored by Hinrich Foundation, the exhibition shows how trade between China and the U.S. has evolved over more than 100 years and how it has affected the two economies. Our thanks to Roxanne Liu (China, HKBU BBA '19) for helping out at the launch event on Dec.13.
