The billionaire's temple and catching oysters in Hong Kong

Posted By Thu H. Do, Tuesday, 8 August 2017

Li Ka-Shing, the Hong Kong's biggest tycoon, spent HK$1.5 billion to build a Tang dynasty-style monastery, which occupies an area of about 4.5 hectares in Tai Po, New Territories.

After taking 30 min MTR from Kowloon Tong station to Tai Po Market station and a short bus ride, one can easily spot the statue of Kwun Yum from the hill, mercifully looking over the sea.

The statue is 76-metre-tall, bronze-forged and known as the second tallest in the world. Rumors have that there are dormitories for VIP guests staying overnight with bullet-proof windows. (SCMP)

To my surprise, the temple doesn't accept "walk-in guests", all have to book online and receive admission at least 1 months prior to the visitWe didn't make the reservation, so were a little bit disappointed, but I guess it's worth the wait, since a sneak-peak from outside of the main entrance has already been impressive enough.

However, we found a nearby beach, just 10 minutes walk away from the temple, where local Hong Kong people come on the weekends to catch oysters, totally for free. Just a few hours on the beach with a hammer and a little bit of patient then you can get a full basket of fresh wild oysters. Given how expensive seafood and food in general is in Hong Kong, this little discovery made up our day.

You definitely should go there!
